How to read the list
- Type I: for residents who need limited help with daily activities and can get out of the building on their own in an emergency.
- Type II: 24-hour personal and health care for residents who need more help. Only Type II facilities can run a secure memory care unit (Utah DLBC levels of care).
- Secure beds: licensed beds in a locked unit, usually used for dementia care. A facility without secure beds may still offer other memory care programs, so ask.
- Licensed beds is the most the facility may serve, not how many openings it has. Call to ask about current availability.
Questions to ask on a tour
- What is the full monthly cost in writing, including care-level fees, medication help, and yearly increases?
- What happens if needs increase, and when would a resident have to move out?
- How many staff are on duty at night, and how do you respond to falls?
- Do you accept the Medicaid New Choices Waiver, now or after a private-pay period?
- May I see your most recent state inspection report?
- Visit twice, once unannounced, at a mealtime or in the evening.
Need help narrowing it down?
We started this because of what Jeff's mom is going through, and soon we may have to look at assisted living ourselves. If you'd like to talk through options, or need to sell or rent a parent's home to pay for care, reach out or call 801-255-8850. More on choosing well is in our assisted living guide.
